Did you apply for registration before 1 December 2018 but aren't yet registered?
You might need to check your email for a message from us. We are continuing to process applications as quickly as possible. However, we have received nearly 17,600 applications for registration from paramedics – this is more applications than initially anticipated.
If you made your application before 1 December 2018 you can continue to use the title paramedic and work as a paramedic until your application is finalised.
Because of provisions in the National Law, in some cases we may need to seek your approval by a separate email to extend the time we need to process your application. If you do receive an email, we ask that you respond and confirm your agreement to the extension of time as soon as possible. Unfortunately, without your approval to extend the time the National Law requires that your application is taken to be refused.
If you receive an extension request email, or have already received one, you need to provide this email (along with your acceptance response) to your employer as evidence that you are able to practice. Once registered, you will need to provide your registration number to your employer.
Do you qualify for temporary exemption?
Did you apply between 1 December 2018 – 28 February 2019?
Generally, if you did not apply for registration before 1 December 2018 you are unable to use the title paramedic or otherwise hold yourself out as a paramedic until you have applied for and been granted registration by the National Board.
However, there may be a limited period of exemption available for some people in specific circumstances until 28 February 2019. If you are eligible for registration (i.e. you hold a suitable qualification or can demonstrate a period of practice that meets the requirements for registration and meet the suitability requirements for registration), you may be eligible for this exemption but it will depend on your specific circumstances.

What to do if you meet the exemption requirements:
- You need to make an application for registration as soon as possible and you may continue to use the title and/or otherwise hold yourself out as a paramedic until 28 February 2019.
- After 28 February 2019 you must stop using the title paramedic and/or holding yourself out as a paramedic until you are granted registration by the National Board.
What happens if you apply for registration after 1 March 2019?
We recommend you apply for registration as soon as you can! Why? Because after 1 March 2019 there is no exemption available and you will not be able to hold yourself out to be – or work as – a paramedic unless you are registered.
If you are returning from extended leave, make sure you leave yourself plenty of time to get registered as you cannot use the title (and therefore be employed as a paramedic) until you are registered.
