Support for bill aimed at tacking alcohol-fuelled violence

Late last year the Queensland Government introduced the Tackling Alcohol-fuelled Violence Legislation Amendment Bill 2015 in a bid to make the state safer. The Bill outlined measures including a state-wide call for last drinks at 2am with Safe Night Precinct boards granted the option of applying for an extended 3am last drinks model, conditional on a 1am lockout. This week United Voice joined the Queensland Nurses Union in presenting our support for the Bill at a public hearing which sought to gauge public comments to help determine if the Bill would meet community needs. Paramedic Torrin Nelson did a fantastic job of presenting far too familiar firsthand accounts of assaults on ambulance officers suffered due to alcohol-fuelled violence.

The Committee report of recommendations is due to Parliament by 8 February 2016.
