United Voice has contacted QAS and drawn attention to a recent amendment to the 1983 Holidays Act. The amendment legislated that an extra penalty be incurred by workers when Christmas Day falls on a Sunday. It was agreed by QAS to pay officers who worked Christmas Day the extra penalty on base rate which this changed attracted. After a further review QAS have also acknowledged that this penalty will also apply to Easter Sunday. This is a small but welcome win for staff who work these unsociable hours to keep us safe. A timely and important message to continue to fight for all workers’ weekend penalty rates. The Save Our Weekend campaign will continue this year.
